Acer Liquid gets its first hands-on
I’ve just spotted some of the first Acer Liquid live shots ever made. It’s a pre-release device we’re talking here, but it has obviously been enough to give the reviewers some positive impressions.
Acer Liquid is the first Android smartphone riding a Snapdragon CPU though downclocked to 768 Mhz in this particular case. I’ve seen many discussions on the matter, but Acer representatives confirmed that personally to us, but unfortunately didn’t share the reasoning behind that decision. I suppose it could be some overheating issue or just saving the battery life, but we may never learn.
It seems the Acer Liquid runs Android 1.6 (Donut) hassle-free and it should be able to do that with the upcoming 2.0 version. Unfortunately it’s not sure if the Liquid will get that upgrade, at least officially.
As far as the UI is concerned Acer did some work on it and put their own menus and features here and there. Well, I am not sure what and how much actually they’ve changed, but judging on my experience with the WinMo 6.5 powered Acer neoTouch, it wouldn’t be so much.
You can probably spot the two new homescreens with bookmarks or media shortcuts organized in rotating wheels. It seems like Acer have put effort in a rotating interface that failed to capture the users interest in the LG S-Class UI. I can’t really understand why they’ve even bothered.
At least the Acer Liquid looks good and unique, and despite all my concerns it could turn to be a really capable device. The neoTouch didn’t managed to play HD videos well with all the Snapdragon power, but I certainly hope that the Liquid will justify its name with good performance and even better OS.
Acer Liquid will hit the market in December, but in the meantime the Acer neoTouch review is coming very soon on commobitrick.blogspot.com.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness fondled with pure intentions
The XPERIA X10 has been gobbling up a lot of attention lately but it’s not the only one in the lineup that deserves attention. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness features a unique transparent display – a sure-fire attention grabber. Here we have a video of the unboxing and a quick look into the overall design and interface of the phone.
The design of the XPERIA Pureness is, uh, pure simplicity. The symbols on the keypad and softkeys are visible only when the backlight is on. When it’s off, the Pureness barely looks like a phone and that is a compliment when it comes to fashion phones. The glass of the display is frosted and not completely transparent and you need a dark background to see things on the screen properly.
There are some strange design choices though – the volume keys are on the sides, one on each side, and the power button is on the back. The headphones also looked curious, with no obvious plug but the video doesn’t show what’s the deal with them.
We haven’t had the pleasure of trying out one ourselves but the first impressions of the Pureness that this video brings is not overly positive – aside from the headphones, there’s not much else interesting in the box (it’s just standard stuff like a charger and USB cable), and the keypad looks very plasticy. Struggling to make out what’s on the screen in direct sunlight we can swallow – it’s not image quality that makes this display so attractive, but cheapo materials don’t have a place on a device that costs this much.

A meaningful Avatar trailer finally goes public
Ladies and gentlemen, you’re not in Kansas anymore, you’re on Pandora…”
The Avatar movie promises action packed combination of real actors and CGI and the new movie trailer is definitely worth a look.
James Cameron’s Avatar is the director’s first movie after Titanic. Yeah, it’s been some time, I know. The story behind the movie is simple – humans have found a distant planet, source of some precious minerals and there is an indigenous tribe of blue humanoid creatures that stands in the way of harvesting the minerals. As humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that look like the locals but are controlled by a human “driver” through a technology that links the driver’s mind to their Avatar body.
We’ll have to wait to 17 December to watch it, but until then, check out the new trailer here.
